Should I Go with a Laptop or a Tablet (Part II)?

Tablets are a lot lighter than laptops.

Size

Size is possibly the biggest reason to go with a tablet instead of a laptop. Tablets are around the size of a small pad of paper and weigh less than two pounds. Most laptops are way heavier and larger. Even one of the littlest ultraportables, the Apple MacBook Air 11, weighs over two pounds and has a profile bigger than that of several tablets.

The main reason for the bigger profile is that the trackpad and keyboard take up additional space. Laptops that include more powerful components that need more power and cooling are even bigger. Due to their smaller weight and size, a tablet is much easier to take around than a laptop, particularly for travel.

If you don’t desire the extra power or other features that take up more space, tablets are the way to go.

Battery Life

Because of the low power requirements of their hardware components, tablets are built for efficiency. In fact, a big part of a tablet’s interior is taken up by the battery. On the other hand, laptops use more powerful hardware. A laptop’s battery takes up a way smaller percentage of the space required for its internal components. Thus, even with the higher capacity battery provided by laptops, they don’t run as long as a tablet’s battery.

If you’re looking for the longest battery life, tablets are the true winner.

Storage Capacity

In order to keep the costs and size of tablets down, manufacturers depend on new solid-state storage memory to store data and programs. While this technology has the possibility to deliver faster access and low power usage, it has one huge disadvantage: the number of files it can store.

By comparison, many laptops still use customary hard drives that hold way more. The typical budget laptop comes with a 500 GB hard drive. Both tablets and laptops include features such as microSD cards or USB ports that make it simple to add external storage.

If you need to store a lot of documents, applications, or other data, laptops are your best bet.
